Starters
November 14, 2009So, recently I have changed my process for creating starters and I think I am much happier with the new process…
Old process:
Using a 2L Pyrex container I would add 1 cup of DME and approx 1.75L of boiling water from the kettle. I would then wait for this to cool and add the yeast.
I would then let the yeast ferment out and chill the starter in the fridge to get the yeast to drop. I would then pour the fermented wort off the top and only add the yeast to my beer.
New process:
Using the same vessel I now take some wort straight out of the kettle pre-boil and use that to start the yeast. This allows me to throw the whole of the starter into the beer.
I have been thinking I should probably let the wort start boiling prior to taking it from the kettle…
Anyway here is a pic of today’s wort
